LOGLINE

A wronged brother takes extreme measures against his sibling to earn a place in their family’s criminal empire, only to discover his true motivations are far more personal than he ever realised.

SYNOPSIS

Tony, a disgruntled repairman who spends his days sore and covered in grease, barely scrapes by while his family enjoys the good life that comes with doing the kind of business reserved for closed doors. Seeking his father’s approval and a place in the family business, he abducts his older brother, Geno, to prove what he is capable of. Unfortunately for Tony, Geno is unfazed to find himself strapped to a chair and threatened with a knife; he has seen and done this all before, and Tony fears when Geno stands on his two feet again, his big brother will make him wish he never had been born.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

I use filmmaking to explore feelings that are often hard to find the words for; in this case, sibling estrangement. I'm also a fan of the crime genre — the suspense of who may lurk in the shadows and what nefarious plans they have in store for you, the tension from not knowing who to trust, and most importantly, the struggles with one's morality. With Harder Things to Wash, I wanted to use the crime genre to process my own emotions. Finally, in a twist of life imitating art, my brother — who I shared a strained bond with — disowned me shortly after we wrapped filming. I found myself in the editing room, performing the autopsy of our relationship.

DIRECTOR'S BIOGRAPHY

John Perivolaris, born in 1992 on the small Greek island of Rhodes, developed a passion for filmmaking early on. He pursued his studies at Glasgow Clyde College in Scotland from 2017 to 2019, where his work earned him a prestigious Royal Television Society Student Award. Between 2020 and 2021, while working as a producer, director, and coordinator, he earned his Master’s degree in filmmaking from the University of the West of Scotland. John’s talent has since been recognised with numerous national and international awards, and he is currently working on his debut feature film.
